CHAPTER 19
JON’S AWAKE.
I could barely keep it together.
Aurion had said it, and I knew it to be true because the prince had looked a little sad and had avoided my eyes when he had spoken. In my heart, I cared about the prince, probably more than he knew, but it would never be in the way he wanted. It would never go beyond a friendship. I could never feel for him the way I felt for Jon. I didn’t know how to express this to the prince without hurting him. I still needed him to get me into that meeting.
Jon was awake!
What did it mean? Was he awake and still close to death? Or was he awake and on the way to mending?
I had been completely preoccupied for hours thinking about Jon when the door to my cell squeaked open again.
Prince Aurion held out his hands to me. “Quickly, before they change their minds.”
I practically ran into his arms. I knew a hug was a bad idea so I settled for a squeeze of his arm.
“I don’t know how you’ve managed it, but I’m grateful.”
“We can talk later about how much you owe me,” said the prince with a mischievous gleam in his silver eyes.
I followed the prince and four coven guards through the castle’s underground cellars. I was queasy and nervous when we reached the fresh air of the main floor.
Would they believe me?
The prince was gleaming in immaculate clothes and boots. He smelled of sweet fruit and something musky, while I stunk of rot, blood, mildew, and sweat. I was embarrassed. I looked positively dreadful—exactly like the savage they expected me to be.
The prince didn’t seem to mind that I looked and smelled like a farmer’s barn. The demons wouldn’t care what I smelled like either. And I was sure some rose water and a silk dress wouldn’t impress them. The guards allowed me a few minutes to use a lavatory on the main floor, and I nearly collapsed with relief.
Afterwards, I could see our reflections in the windows as we walked down another long corridor, so I knew it was late in the night. The castle bustled with the movement and voices of the many more witches who were being accommodated here now. I couldn’t recognize their faces.
Were these some of the witches who had come with us from Witchdom? Or were they witches who had come afterwards or even before?
Fawkes had said many more would come, and by the looks of it, he had been right.
I asked Aurion if Jon would be present at the meeting, but he said Jon was still too weak to do anything. Still, I made a mental note to seek him out after the assembly. One thing was for sure. I wasn’t going back to the bowels of the castle now that I knew Jon was alive.
We arrived at a large set of double doors, and I could hear the sounds of a heated discussion from within. The prince gave me an encouraging smile and pulled open the doors.
